Lunar Clock Principle

A Lunar clock is designed to indicate the current Moon Phase at any time. Its operation is based on a specific mechanism , which makes one revolution of the dial in 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes . This period is also called the lunar month or lunation .

29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes, why this time?

This time which sets the pace of the Lunar clock corresponds to the duration of a lunation , that is to say the time necessary for the Moon to pass through all its phases, from the New Moon to the following New Moon.

This includes the time it takes for the Moon to return to the same position relative to the Sun, which takes about 29 days, plus a little extra time for the Earth to move slightly around the Sun during this process. This is why the lunation takes a little longer than 29 days.

How to read a Lunar clock?

The clock face corresponds to a lunation, that is, 1 complete cycle of the Moon. The left part of the face corresponds to the Waxing Moon , while the right part corresponds to the Waning Moon .
