Lunar Clock Principle

A Lunar Clock is designed to indicate the current Moon Phase at all times. Its operation is based on a specific mechanism, which completes one revolution of the dial in 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes. This period is also known as the lunar month or lunation.

Why 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes?

This Lunar Clock time corresponds to the duration of a lunation, i.e. the time it takes for the Moon to go through all its phases, from New Moon to the next New Moon.

This includes the time it takes for the Moon to return to the same position relative to the Sun, which takes around 29 days, plus a little extra time for the Earth to move slightly around the Sun during this process. This is why the lunation takes just over 29 days.

How to read a Moon Clock?

The clock face corresponds to a Lunation, i.e. 1 complete cycle of the Moon. The left-hand side of the dial corresponds to the waxing Moon, while the right-hand side corresponds to the waning Moon.
